Afromeals Foundation Curates 50 Culturally Relevant Food Boxes for Thanksgiving at Withrow High School

← Back to Blog

This Thanksgiving season, Afromeals Foundation had the honor of curating 50 culturally relevant food boxes for families connected to Withrow High School. For us, food is more than nourishment. It is culture, comfort, and connection. These boxes were created with intention to reflect familiar ingredients many families know, love, and cook with at home.

Each box was thoughtfully packed to support meaningful meals during the holiday season and beyond. Families received staple items that allow flexibility, dignity, and creativity in the kitchen, while honoring cultural food traditions.

What Was Inside the Boxes

Each food box included:

  • Rice
  • Beans
  • Ripe plantains
  • Macaroni
  • Canned diced tomatoes
  • Canned mixed vegetables
  • Afromeals spice blends with easy to follow recipes
  • Seasoning cubes

By pairing ingredients with Afromeals spice blends and recipes, families were not only given food but also guidance and inspiration. Our goal was to make cooking approachable, familiar, and joyful.

Community Support That Made This Possible

This initiative was made possible through the generosity and collaboration of community partners and supporters. Ingredient support from Costco and Kroger helped ensure each box was well stocked with quality staples.

Additional funding and sponsorship support came from Afromeals LLC, along with generous donations from Afromeals Foundation board members. Their collective support allowed us to cover remaining costs and deliver these boxes with care and intention.

Why Culturally Relevant Food Matters

Food assistance is most impactful when it reflects the cultures of the people being served. When families receive ingredients they recognize, it removes barriers and restores confidence in the kitchen. It allows meals to feel like home, especially during a season centered on togetherness.

At Afromeals Foundation, we believe culturally relevant food access is an essential part of food security. These Thanksgiving boxes were one small but meaningful step toward ensuring families feel seen, respected, and supported.

Help Us Continue This Work

To continue providing culturally relevant food boxes with recipes to low-income families, Afromeals Foundation is seeking committed sponsors and community partners who want to invest in long-term food access solutions. Consistent sponsorship allows us to plan ahead, reach more families, and ensure these boxes remain available beyond the holiday season.

Support from sponsors helps cover food costs, culturally appropriate ingredients, recipe development, and distribution so families receive not just food, but meals they can confidently prepare and enjoy at home.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead

We are deeply grateful to Withrow High School, Costco, Kroger, our sponsors, and our board members for believing in this work and standing with us. Moments like this reaffirm why we do this work and motivate us to continue expanding culturally relevant food access across Cincinnati and Dayton.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or supporting future food box initiatives, we would love to connect. Together, we can continue turning meals into moments of comfort, culture, and care.
